What is brine?
Brine is water that has is saturated with salt, and is used in the production of many cheeses. It is this same watery juice that old fashioned feta bobs around in.

- There is more than 300ml of brine in a 400g tub of Feta.
- In the European Union, only feta made in Greece is legally allowed to be called Feta.
- Traditional Feta cheese is produced using a minimum of 70% sheeps milk with up to 30% goats' milk
- There is mention of Feta cheese in Homer’s Odyssey, written 800 BC.
- In Greek mythology, the Cyclops Polyphemus is credited with the invention of Feta.
- The name Feta is derived from the Greek Fetta, which means slice.
About the anti brine society
The Anti Brine Society was formed by a group of concerned South African cheese fans who came to realise the impact of outdated packaging in their country after a visit to Fairview, in Paarl.
Feta cheese is one of the most popular dairy products in South Africa and is enjoyed by consumers all around the country. However, Feta in this country is still packed in the old-fashioned bulky plastic tubs, with pieces of feta floating in slimy brine water. More progressive production and packaging methods are used in today's markets around the world, negating the need for these leaky tubs and useless brine water.
This society was formed to educate consumers on the alternatives and open the door for South African Feta to move into the 21st century.
